Manufacturing Experts in the Classroom Technology Reinvestment
Project #3666
Award Dates: 1 July
94 - 30 June 98
The University of New Mexico (UNM)
will use existing Manufacturing Engineering Program
(MEP) and Management of Technology (MOT) faculty to
coordinate the use of about eighty technical and business
manufacturing experts from regional and national companies,
private consultants, and federal laboratories into fourteen
new and five existing manufacturing and business courses.
Equipment and facilities at regional company and Federal
Laboratory sites will also be used for training students.
The courses and facilities are developed under this
and the related TRP project entitled "Apprenticeship-Oriented
Education and Extension Training".
Nearly forty business entities or affiliates,
including Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National
Laboratories, Philips Laboratory, and the State of New
Mexico, will contribute guest lecturers, special tours,
and support for programs and student projects.
This project seeks to inject the expertise
of manufacturing technologists and business leaders
into courses. A major focus of the proposed experts
is in the nationally-critical area of board-level and
chip-level electronics manufacturing. Experts will contribute
to full courses, short courses, company-site lectures,
tours and practicums, and mentoring of students. Graduate
assistants will support the instructional requirements
of the experts. Graduate fellowships will be available
for manufacturing engineering students, including minority
students. The message of the experts will be distributed,
via an existing and to-be-expanded state-wide video
network, to sites at companies, Federal Laboratories,
State-supported manufacturing extension and technology
centers, and other universities. Instructional interactions
will also occur with technical-vocational and disability
institutes.
The project will assist individuals
displaced by the U.S. defense reduction activities,
and provide state-of-the-art industry technology information
to Federal Laboratory workers, while providing a high
quality work force to manufacturing companies, helping
them to become more competitive in the global economy.
